With all the hype surrounding the release of the new mid-engine Corvette Z06 coupe, it’s easy to forget that the Corvette Racing program homologates these cars for their racing programs. Today, we’re pleased to share a video of the new Corvette Z06 GT3.R race car as its put thru its paces at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida. This video, originally posted by Youtuber Lanky Turtle, shows the car (still camouflaged) in all of its glory.
Per the Chevrolet website, the new race car was “designed for the 2024 racing season to compete in the GT3 category. (The) Corvette Z06 GT3.R will soon join a family of long-standing victors on the track. This track-only race car will be the first that Chevrolet offers to both pro and amateur teams.”
What does that mean exactly? Simply put, while the new Corvette Z06 GT3.R will not be street-legal, it will be available to anyone interested in competing on the track with a genuine purpose-built Corvette race car.
The modern era of Corvette racing began in 1999 with the introduction of the C5.R race car developed in cooperation between Chevrolet and Pratt & Miller Engineering. Over the years, the Corvette Racing program has developed many variations of the Corvette and established it as a successful competitor in GT sports car racing events around the world, including the GT1, GT2, and GTLM/GTE Pro categories. Once more, working in cooperation with Pratt & Miller, Chevrolet is developing the next generation of the Corvette to take the GT3 category by storm and carry on the legacy. With over 120 wins, including 14 Manufacturer’s Championships and 8 class victories at Le Mans, there is no doubt that the future of Corvette Racing remains bright with the development of this latest race car.
