The fifth-generation Corvette marked the return of the legendary Z06 package, which had made a brief appearance in 1963 before being discontinued due to GM’s adherence to the AMA’s ban on factory racing involvement.
However, by 2001, no such restrictions applied, and the Corvette team unveiled an all-new Z06 model, based on the fixed-roof coupe introduced in 1999. Already a success in terms of engineering and design, the C5 Corvette became even more impressive in Z06 form, blending blistering performance with modern conveniences like power accessories.
At its core was the LS6 all-aluminum V8 engine, built on a new block that would later be used in all Corvette models. Initially rated at 385 HP, the LS6’s output was bumped to 405 HP in 2002. A unique 6-speed manual transmission and specialized FE4 suspension further enhanced the Z06’s performance, making it a formidable contender on both road and track.
