The C5 Z06 is a no-nonsense Corvette aimed directly at diehard performance enthusiasts at the upper end of the high performance market. The 2001 version followed in the original’s footsteps with the most powerful engine in the Corvette lineup, the all-aluminum LS6, whose designation recalled another Chevrolet legend, the 1970 Chevelle SS454.
Rated at 385 HP at 6,000 RPM and 385 lb-ft of torque, the LS6 was combined with a specific 6-speed manual transmission and race-tuned FE4 suspension employing a stiffer rear spring, a larger front sway bar and increased camber at all four corners.
Wider staggered-diameter wheels and tires were used, and brake ducts were added to provide additional cooling for on-track use. Special exhaust, thinner glass and reduced insulation accounted for a 100-pound weight reduction over the 2001 hardtop.
The 2001 Z06 boasted an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 8.09 pounds per horsepower, with 0-60 miles per hour times clocking in around four seconds and quarter mile times clocking in at just over 12 seconds.
Finally, Chevrolet had introduced a Corvette that was capable of competing with some of the staunchest competitors from around the world while maintaining a price tag that was only a fraction of the competitions cost.
