AutoTopNL is a YouTube channel that many Corvette enthusiasts may not know about. Despite being from the Netherlands, the group that runs the channel often takes day trips to Germany to review, film, or test a variety of super, hyper, and “normal” cars.
They have done everything from the latest 2021 Porsche Type 992 911 Turbo S, all the way down to… well, a 2012 Corvette C6 ZR1!
Germany is one of the few places in the world left with unrestricted speed zones on their motorways. To us, the common man, they are known simply as the Autobahns.
This isn’t to say that the Autobahns are a free-for-all death trap. Instead, they are incredibly civilized about it. If you cruise, cruise in the right lane. If you are a faster car and overtaking, stay in the left lane.
As such, it is also one of the few places a LS9 6.2 liter, supercharged V8 with 640 HP and 605 lbs-ft of torque can fully stretch its legs and get the ZR1 travelling at a fair clip.
Despite the traffic, they were able to get the car to 300 KPH, which is just about 186.5 MPH. Stock. Unmodified.
There is also a GPS speedometer that polls every 4 seconds or so attached to the windscreen. This lag does, unfortunately, end up showing the speed the car was going at when it polled, not constantly updated.
It is also quite a laugh to watch the estimated KM’s to empty plummet as the car is driven at speed. Starting at 400 KM when the video begins, it ends up at 226 or so KM when they finally pull into a parking area. Half a tank, gone, in just a few minutes of driving. In other words: a proper V8!
And for those who consider themselves absolute Corvette purists… notice the 6 speed stick in the center console.
