Demand Is High for the Mid-Engine Design
Anyone who was worried that the 2020 Corvette Stingray with its mid-engine design would be a tough sell can shut their mouth for good. Michael Simcoe, GM design chief, recently set the record straight on the car. At the Concours d’Elegance of America, he made it clear that the car is selling extremely well. He said the following to Autoblog:
“It’s nearly sold out. It’s so close that it’s bound to be sold out soon,” Simcoe told the publication. Autoblog also noted that he told a large group of people that orders for the car “have already hit the first year of production numbers.” That’s good news for Chevy, but it might mean that getting your hands on a C8 will be a little tougher than some folks thought.
What Simcoe failed to mention was actual numbers. It’s unclear just how many of the vehicles Chevy has taken orders for. It’s also not totally clear what kind of volume GM is hoping to get out of the Corvette. According to GoodCarBadCar.net, great sales years for the Corvette have been well over 30,000 units, and we expect Chevy to be shooting for that number at least. It’ll be interesting to see how many the company can produce and sell in the first year and beyond.
