After the groundbreaking introduction of the eighth-generation Corvette — which finally brought a mid-engine layout and a new flat-plane crank V8 — Chevrolet unveiled the E-Ray for 2024. Positioned as a rival to modern hybrid supercars, the E-Ray uses a front-mounted 160-horsepower electric motor driving the front wheels as a supplemental power source, while the mid-mounted LT2 V8 powers the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic.
In a recent DragTimes YouTube video, the E-Ray put its speed to the test against a McLaren 600LT at the dragstrip. The E-Ray pairs GM’s 6.2-liter LT2 V8 with its electric motor for a combined 655 horsepower sent to all four wheels, though it carries a curb weight of 4,100 pounds. The McLaren, meanwhile, packs a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 producing 592 horsepower, but weighs just 3,300 pounds and sends power to the rear wheels only.
In the first race, the E-Ray surged ahead off the line and maintained the lead, with the McLaren struggling to catch up. For the second race, the McLaren was given a head start and managed to get a car-length lead after a quicker launch. In the final, heads-up run, both cars went flat-out — the E-Ray delivered a blistering 2.83-second 0-60 time and secured another win.
