1) Milford Proving Ground Celebrates 100 Years of Making GM Vehicles Better

The vastness of GM’s Milford Proving Ground almost seems unfathomable, with over 150 miles of track and loops dedicated to making our Corvettes better each year and generation. The Michigan compound broke ground in 1924 and now spans 4000 acres of greatness. This is what GM had to say about Milford Proving Ground, which is the auto industry’s oldest testing site.

For 100 years, we have tested new cars, technology, and safety features at our Milford Proving Ground(MPG) in southeast Michigan. Covering 4,000 acres and featuring nearly 150 miles of roads, nearly 10% of our 52,000+ Michigan workforce is located at MPG where the site serves as an important facility to test and refine automotive features. MPG is linked to a rich history of innovation that reflects the past, present and future of GM.

Other Milford Proving Ground Fun Facts:

  • The Milford Proving Ground opened on September 25th, 1924, under the direction of GM President Alfred P. Sloan. Its purpose was to analyze GM vehicles in controlled conditions. Testing included evaluations of vehicle speed, handling, fuel economy, braking, durability, hill climb performance, and safety.
  • The facility was originally “just” 1100 acres with only 5.5 miles of test tracks.
  • From 1941 to 1946, the Milford Proving Ground served as a testbed for the U.S. military, with over 680 military vehicles evaluated and more than 850,000 miles covered to test combat readiness.
  • By the time the 70s entered the picture, fuel economy had become a primary focus, as did crash safety with the development of crash test dummies, airbags, child seats, and ABS. Alternative fuel vehicles and the all-electric EV1 began testing in the ‘90s.

2) Nearly 100 Corvettes Takeover Tail of the Dragon

With 318 curves in just 11 miles, it’s almost like the infamous Tail of the Dragon was made for the Corvette. Sure, we let other cars and motorcycles use the road, but God made that road for us! Okay, I’ll stop with the cheekiness, but I know many of us feel that way when we are behind the wheel of these remarkable machines. On a serious note, this beautiful area was recently hit by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and while the Tail of the Dragon was spared the direct wrath of the storm, our thoughts are with the Appalachian communities affected by this catastrophic storm.

Now, let’s take a look at the Tail of the Dragon; then, we’ll show you the incredible video from Vettes versus the Dragon, where nearly 100 Corvettes took over the iconic road.

Vettes versus the Dragon: An annual Corvette Driving Event in the Great Smoky Mountains.

This is not your Papaw’s Corvette event! This is for Corvette owners that drive their cars as intended, not just shine them up and sit beside them with your lawn chair in a parking lot. This footage is a recap of our inaugural event that was a massive hit! This was three full days of mountain driving, from September 6th-8th, 2024. Our inaugural event had over 80 Corvettes from 19 different states and Canada. We split into several different drive groups so you will be placed in a group based on your experience and desired pace.

Our 2025 event is September 12th-14th, 2025.

For three days every September, we will drive over 600 miles of the greatest roads our country has to offer. The mountains of Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina are home to the greatest driving roads in America, including the legendary Tail of the Dragon with 318 curves in 11 miles, the Cherohala Skyway, Moonshiner 28, Hellbender, Blue Ridge Parkway, Foothills Parkway, and many, many more. We are local to the area and take you through all of the iconic roads you’ve heard about, but through hundreds of miles of equally fantastic roads that are much less travelled and only known by few.”
