The 1961 Corvette marked the end of an era for the first generation. Chrome took a backseat, with a sleek mesh grille replacing the old vertical chrome bars. The rear end received a fresh look, inspired by Bill Mitchell’s 1958 XP-700 show car. This sharp-edged design foreshadowed the iconic twin taillights and slim bumpers that would debut on the revolutionary 1963 Sting Ray.
Power also got a boost in 1961. Borrowing from the previous year’s experimental racing parts, the Corvette received high-flow cylinder heads. This bumped peak output to an impressive 315 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm.
This fuel-injected engine propelled the Corvette from 0 to 60 mph in just 6 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 15.5 seconds at 109 mph. According to Road & Track magazine, the top speed reached an impressive 128 mph.
