Corvette Of The Day: 1958 Chevrolet Corvette 283/245

In 1958, Chevrolet unveiled a restyled Corvette that grabbed attention. Featuring the quad headlights popular at the time, a vented hood for better engine cooling, and chrome accents adorning the trunk and sides, it was undeniably ornate – some might even say overdone. This abundance of design elements made it one of the most elaborately decorated Corvettes ever produced.

The  283-cubic-inch V8 engine offering 245 horsepower featured dual four-barrel carburetors, hydraulic valve lifters, and a 5,200-rpm tachometer, all paired with a four-speed manual transmission.

The 1958 Corvette’s styling proved to be a point of contention. While the 1956 Corvette with its focus on comfort, American flair, and a powerful V8 was generally well-received, some felt the 1958 model took the styling a step too far.

Chevrolet listened to this feedback, and the 1959 Corvette went back to a more streamlined, purpose-driven look. This turn of events solidified the 1958 Corvette’s place as a unique and distinctive entry in Corvette history.
