Mecum Magic? How Did The Historic Collection Of 1963 Split Windows Do?

Mecum estimated the 7 Split Window Sting Rays, 1 of every color produced, at $2,250,000! Did they over or underperform?

This year’s Mecum Kissimmee auction was a 13-day extravaganza that spawned many notable events, including a special dedicated Corvette Day, and a feast of Corvettes for enthusiasts to dream about. How much of a feast? For 2024, does over 465 Corvettes spanning every single generation satisfy your Corvette appetite?

This is the first of a multi-part series where CorvSport will highlight the most exciting Corvette sales from this year’s Mecum Kissimmee auction. And I can’t think of anywhere better to begin than this phenomenal historic collection of seven 1963 Sting Rays, called “The Split Window Colorama Collection.” For the first time ever, one of every color Split Window Sting Ray was offered at one venue.

So, how did this magnificent collection of 7 Split Window Sting Rays do, and did they sell for more or less than the median Mecum sales estimate of $2,250,000? Or the worst case scenario, a no sale, what Mecum calls “the bid goes on…”

As many of our faithful CorvSport predicted after our original “Colorama” feature, some of Mecum’s sales estimates were overly optimistic. And these predictions were proven true, with only 1 of the 7 overperforming. But look at this number!

6 of 7 SOLD for a total of $1,559,250!

Yikes! That’s an average of $259,875! I remember back in the early 2000s when Split Windows were still consistently under $100,000. So, on the other hand, one could also confidently claim these Split Window Sting Rays overperformed. What are your thoughts on these Split Window sales?
