If the first few years of the C2 Corvette were strong sales years, 1966 blew it out of the ware. A total of 27,720 1966 model year cars were built. The 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray introduced the real “Big Block” 427 cubic-inch engines. The 425 horsepower engine was originally specified as a 450 and the 390 was originally 400. No changes to the actual engines were made but the literature and badging were changed to the lower numbers.

Of the cars produced, 9,958 were coupes (35.92% of all cars produced) and 17,762 were convertibles (64.08% of all cars produced).
