Matching-Numbers 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe 327/360 Up For Auction

Matching numbers fuel-injected 327/360 HP V8 engine

Chevrolet’s 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe, once controversial for its bold one-year-only split rear-window design, has since become one of the most coveted classic Corvettes. This particular model, finished in Daytona Blue with a dark blue vinyl interior, is currently available on Bring A Trailer.

Powered by its original, matching-numbers 327/360 HP fuel-injected V8 engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, this car was first sold in Maryland and later resided in California, Indiana, and Florida.

By 1978, it had made its way to Florida, where it was displayed at the Mount Dora Museum of Speed until its current owner acquired it in February 2021. Recently refinished in 2024, the Corvette features 15″ steel wheels with spinner-style hubcaps, concealed headlights, and an AM/FM radio.

The 1963 Corvette Sting Ray’s design drew inspiration from GM Design Chief Bill Mitchell’s fascination with marine life, which he experienced during his annual fishing trips. Mitchell’s Stingray SCCA racer, developed with Larry Shinoda, was a precursor to the production Corvette Sting Ray.

For 1963, four 327 CI V8 engine options were available, with the top-tier RPO L84 delivering 360 HP through competition-derived Rochester Ramjet fuel injection. A redesigned chassis with independent rear suspension marked a significant improvement in handling.

Upon its release, the new Sting Ray generated excitement, pushing Corvette production to a record 21,513 units for 1963, including 10,594 coupes. The L84 engine powered 2,610 units, representing roughly 10% of the year’s total production.
